SHARJAH // A driver who removed his number plates before taking to the road to perform reckless stunts has been tracked down by police.

The motorist removed the plates on his Nissan pick-up truck before committing the offences on an unnamed road so he would not be identified, but Sharjah Police found him anyway.

Col Shwaaf Abdulrahman, director of the traffic and patrols department, said: “Police patrols were able to track him down and arrest him and his vehicle was impounded.”

Statistics released by Sharjah traffic police last month revealed that 1,276 drivers had been caught between January and September clocking speeds in excess of 200 kilometres and hour.

The top speed recorded was on Al Qata Nazwa Road, where police caught a driver doing 230kph.

Sharjah Police urged residents to report any illegal and reckless motorists.
