DUBAI // Commuters can now pick up books on their journey to work from Metro station libraries provided by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority as part of the 2016 Year of Reading initiative.

The “Knowledge Chair” is a mini library comprising novels, children’s stories and other publications on topics such as management and innovation. Books are placed in circular shelves with a chair placed in the centre and will be available at various locations.

Two chairs will be placed at Rashidiya and Abu Hail bus stations, two at customer service centres at Umm Al Romool and Al Barsha, and another at the Public Transport Agency, Muhaisna.

Chairs are portable, and can be transferred to other RTA hubs to expand the scheme.

Children across the Arab world have been challenged by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to collectively read more than 50 million books during the academic year, as part of the literary celebration.

Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the RTA, said: “The initiative supports the idea of reading in public places and the optimal use of the transit time.”
