Commuters between Dubai and Sharjah continued to face long delays on Monday as busy motorways between the two emirates closed due to flooding and waterlogging.
Sharjah’s Muwaileh commercial area and a section of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road were sealed off until Monday morning, Sharjah Police announced late last night.
Muwaileh has been closed on both sides, while Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road has been closed from Qasimia University to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bridge in both directions.
Meanwhile, traffic congestion could be seen on the main roads as well the internal streets in Sharjah and Dubai, according to updates on Traffic app Waze.
Traffic was almost at a standstill on the Floating Bridge parallel to D-74 Al Ittihad street and cars are barely trailing at 7 km/hr in the morning rush hours.
The entire square of Al Qusais 1 is seeing heavy traffic in all directions.
Al Wahda street, one of Sharjah’s busiest highways, is also experiencing heavy traffic with slow-moving cars.
Traffic woes persists in Abu Dhabi too as the interchange from Yas to Sheikh Zayed Road remained closed on Monday morning, reported a motorist on Abu Dhabi Q&A, a Facebook page for traffic updates in the capital.
“Traffic is bumper-to-bumper and is being redirected to Abu Dhabi where you have to take a U-turn at the immediate exit if you’re heading to Dubai,” said the post.
However, the police reported that traffic was “usual” on Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway in the morning hours. Traffic heading to Abu Dhabi was smooth on Khalifa bridge, Mussafah bridge, Al Khaleej Al Arabi, Sheikh Zayed street and Al Raha beach. Heavy traffic was reported on Maqtaa bridge inbound, and Al Rawda Palace roundabout.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues

Heavily-sugared soft drinks slip through the tax net
Some popular drinks with high levels of sugar and caffeine have slipped through the fizz drink tax loophole, as they are not carbonated or classed as an energy drink.
Arizona Iced Tea with lemon is one of those beverages, with one 240 millilitre serving offering up 23 grams of sugar - about six teaspoons.
A 680ml can of Arizona Iced Tea costs just Dh6.
Most sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, five teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

From Europe to the Middle East, economic success brings wealth - and lifestyle diseases
A rise in obesity figures and the need for more public spending is a familiar trend in the developing world as western lifestyles are adopted.
One in five deaths around the world is now caused by bad diet, with obesity the fastest growing global risk. A high body mass index is also the top cause of metabolic diseases relating to death and disability in Kuwait, Qatar and Oman – and second on the list in Bahrain.
In Britain, heart disease, lung cancer and Alzheimer’s remain among the leading causes of death, and people there are spending more time suffering from health problems.
The UK is expected to spend $421.4 billion on healthcare by 2040, up from $239.3 billion in 2014.
And development assistance for health is talking about the financial aid given to governments to support social, environmental development of developing countries.
