Dubai Metro services between Union Square Station and Business Bay Station were delayed by an emergency technical malfunction.
The emirate's Roads and Transport Authority confirmed an "emergency" error at about 8.30pm, taking to Twitter again five minutes later to say that the malfunction had been resolved.
"The affected metro stations are operating normally. We thank all metro users for their cooperation," it said.
On social media, some commuters using the Red Line said they were delayed for more than an hour.
Passengers complained that the metro cars were hot and tweeted at the RTA asking for updates.
"Stuck at Internet metro station for over an Hour. @rta_dubai How much time will it take?" asked one.
"I depend on the metro as my main transportation to the airport to my work also many passengers but today am late because of Dubai metro," said another passenger.
Others sought alternative transport but acknowledged that traffic would be heavy on a Thursday night.
"Apparently [the] metro is not working at all. So now another dilemma, the struggle to get taxi. Time to get competitive!" a resident tweeted.
This month, the metro was closed for more than four hours after a technical glitch was reported during the morning commute.
The disruption was also on the Red Line, at Sharaf DG station. The RTA organised buses to shuttle passengers between affected stations until the issue was resolved.
