DUBAI // Tourists and residents have taken more than 44 million trips on the Dubai Metro and almost 1 million on the tram in the first three months of this year.
Statistics from the Roads and Transport Authority show the number of metro journeys has increased from the first quarter of last year, when there were just over 40 million, but the rate of annual increase is slowing.
The figures are “a strong indicator that these two transit means are attracting the attention of residents and visitors, who make them their prime transit modes within the emirate of Dubai”, said Abdullah Al Ali, the chief executive of the RTA’s rail department.
Mr Al Ali said that 44,371,860 trips were made on the metro – 28,251,036 on the Red Line and 16,120,824 on the Green – and 943,982 on the Dubai Tram in the first three months.
Deira City Centre was the busiest station on the Red Line, with 1,830,912 journeys, followed by Union with 1,800,149, and Al Rigga with 1,796,758.
Al Fahidi was the busiest station on the Green Line, with 1,798,473 journeys, followed by Baniyas with 1,624,902, and Al Ghubaiba, with 1,246,898.
For the tram, Dubai Marina had the most passengers, with 249,196 journeys, then Jumeirah Lakes Towers with 121,041, and Jumeirah Beach Residence 1 with 115,081.
