ABU DHABI // Motorists have been warned against driving when feeling drowsy, particularly during Ramadan when fasting can affect concentration.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority on Monday began a campaign to remind motorists about the risks of driving when exhausted.
“The noble values of the holy month of Ramadan have to have impact on the attitudes of individuals including compliance with the traffic rules and avoiding encroachment on the rights of road users,” said Maitha bin Udai, chief executive of Traffic & Roads Agency of the RTA.
“The difference between the sleeping and working times during Ramadan impacts the concentration of fasting motorists, which is clearly reflected when employees drive home,” she said.
She believed most accidents in Ramadan were caused by tailgating as reaction time to sudden braking was reduced by tiredness.
Ms bin Udai urged drivers to leave a sufficient distance between vehicles. She also said people should make sure their air-conditioning is working, as heat can cause fatigue and exhaustion. “Moreover, the driver has to keep his or her back in an upright position with the head up during driving,” she said.
She called upon all motorists to take sufficient rest before driving, and to rest if they feel exhausted or sleepy.
