Abu Dhabi’s traffic management centre has started implementing vehicle-actuated signal timings at 44 junctions on Abu Dhabi island, eight on Yas Island and four on Saadiyat Island, the Department of Transport (DoT) said on Wednesday. The method uses sensors to detect the weight of a vehicle and changes the traffic signals to serve the fluctuating demand.

It is being implemented as a transitional measure while the DoT is awaiting the completion of its fully automated and adaptive traffic management system.

This mode has helped ease congestion and reduces delay, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions.

On average, it has reduced delays at peak hours by six per cent in Abu Dhabi’s central business district (CBD), 31 per cent outside the CBD; and 50 per cent in Saadiyat and Reem Islands, said Hamad Al Afeefi, acting director of the DoT’s traffic management and technology division.

At off-peak hours, it has reduced delays by 75 per cent in the Abu Dhabi CBD; 90 per cent outside the CBD, and 97 per cent in Saadiyat and Reem Islands.
