Construction has begun on two roundabouts in Al Ain, a city known for its imaginatively decorated traffic circles.
Asharej roundabout, near UAE University, will be converted into a tunnel and the Al Markhaniya roundabout, in Al Markhaniya near the Al Ain International Airport, will be converted to a traffic signal intersection.
An improved road network, landscaping, sidewalks and cycling paths will be added between the two junctions.
The Dh183 million development is a joint project between Al Ain City Municipality and Musanada, the Abu Dhabi General Services Company.
The project, done in collaboration with the Department of Transport, will improve traffic flow in the area and reduce congestion.
Many roundabouts in the UAE have been replaced by signal junctions and flyovers in recent years to improve road safety for all road users and accommodate more vehicles.
Roundabouts were a popular feature of the UAE’s early road systems, based on British traffic systems and designed for low volume of traffic.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
