DUBAI // A wooden cargo ship sank 12 nautical miles off the UAE coast in the early hours of Monday morning.
Fishermen reported hearing a "huge explosion" before seeing the ship in flames, according to Al Ittihad, the Arabic sister paper of The National.
Witnesses say the crew was rescued by an unidentified vessel and taken to an unknown destination. The size of the ship and the nature of its cargo are still unknown.
Fishermen notified the authorities after hearing the blast and seeing flames spring up in the distance.
The fire lasted from about 8.30pm on Sunday until about 3am the following morning.
An investigation is under way.
