Almost 7,700 taxis in Abu Dhabi make six million journeys every month, according to figures from TransAD.

Mohamed Darwish Al Qamzi, director general of TransAD, said the fleet includes 7,200 regular cabs, 220 airport taxi vans, in addition to 270 Mercedes minivans launched in March.

Mr Al Qamzi said the six millions taxi trips meet the needs of the public, with vehicles for passengers with special needs, families, as well as those driven by women, available upon request.

Airport cabs are equipped with an electronic payment system, he said, adding that TransAD has plans to offer the same service in regular cabs in the future, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National.
