Abu Dhabi Police have warned motorists of the dangers of running red lights.

A series of videos posted to its social media has shown the severe accidents that occur when drivers ignore basic road rules.

Several clips showed cars ploughing into oncoming traffic despite the fact a red light is showing.

The incidents cause substantial damage to the vehicles and endanger the lives of motorists and pedestrians.

Drivers flouting rules face severe penalties. In new regulations announced earlier this month, any driver caught committing this offence will have their car impounded and licence confiscated for six months with hefty fines to release the car.

Police urged everyone to adhere to safety rules.
