DUBAI // More than 100 people have been killed on the emirate’s roads in the first seven months of this year.

Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the Dubai Police Traffic department, said 106 people were killed in the time frame this year, an increase from 99 during the same months last year.

He added that Dubai Police recorded 1,529 road incidents in the first seven months of the year, in which more than 1,200 people have been injured.

Of the 1,210 people injured, 122 were severely injured, 391 were moderately injured and 697 sustained minor injuries.

“The traffic department is adamant about studying the reasons for the increase of deaths to try and find a solution that will prohibit fatal car accidents,” said Col Al Mazrouei.

“The department will deploy more patrols on main roads, where most accidents occur, as well as launch a number of initiatives and campaigns.”

Col Al Mazrouei said that most road deaths were a result of car crashes, followed by run-over incidents.

He said 67 people were killed and 873 injured this year in 1,005 car crashes involving 2,302 vehicles. Run-over incidents caused the deaths of 19 people and caused injury to 197 others in 185 different incidents involving 191 vehicles.

The main reasons for accidents were sudden swerving, speeding, running red lights, tailgating, not giving pedestrians the right of way, not keeping to a lane and not ensuring the path is clear before entering a road.

Police said that 91.2 per cent of road incidents this year involved male drivers, while only 8.8 per cent involved females.
