AL AIN // As the city's population climbs towards one million in the next 20 years, planners in Al Ain are looking at long-range options to coax residents of the oasis city out of their cars and on to a tram and train system that would link up with the country's planned rail network. The Department of Transport announced yesterday that it would embark on the Al Ain Surface Transport Master Plan, within the framework of the Plan Al Ain 2030, and expects to complete it by the first half of next year.
Abdullah al Otaiba, the department chairman, promised the plan would meet "current and future needs while upholding the unique heritage and environmental character of the Al Ain region". It will also focus on improving the flow of individuals and goods to and from Oman, which borders the city. The department is planning a series of public meetings to seek suggestions for the plan. WHAT IS GRAPHENE?
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were experimenting with sticky tape and graphite, the material used as lead in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But when they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
