As of October this year traffic related deaths and injuries across the country fell 5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

In the Ministry of Interior report, released by the Traffic Coordination Directorate, fatalities dropped from 589 to 560 and injuries from 5,909 to 5,606.

Overall, there was also a slight drop in accidents.

Better police presence on roads was a factor in the falling numbers, said Brig Ghaith Al Zaabi, Director General of the traffic department.

“These efforts are in line with the ministry’s efforts to improve traffic safety and create a safe traffic environment according to international standards in this field,” he said.

Almost a fifth of the 3,935 traffic accidents that took place between January and October were the result of reckless driving, while tailgating came in second place.
