DUBAI // A Polish advertising producer who was arrested after 30 pieces of candy he had in his bag turned out to be cocaine, will serve 4-years in prison, Dubai Criminal Court has ruled.
The 35-year-old was charged with smuggling and possessing for personal use 93 grams of cocaine shaped into 30 small green sweets, prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court.
On March 12 this year the tourist entered the country through Terminal 3 at the Dubai International Airport.
“It was my female colleague who suspected the candy when she spotted them at the bottom of the man’s bag,” said a 20-year-old customs inspector, adding the sweets were sent to the criminal laboratory that confirmed they were cocaine.
The defendant denied the smuggling charge and said he thought it was candy and did not know it was cocaine. He apologised and asked for a lenient sentence.
He will be deported after completing his sentence.
