ABU DHABI // The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre provided iftar meals to about 515,000 people in the first two weeks of Ramadan.
Iftar tents were set up in the grounds of the mosque, where about 350,000 people broke their fast. Another 165,000 meals were given to worshippers performing extra taraweeh prayers.
Special tents were set up to allow Muslim women and families to break their fasts.
The Guests for Iftar project, which the mosque hosts every Ramadan, hosts between 22,000 and 25,000 diners a day.
The food is prepared at the Armed Forces Officers Club.
The centre has been working with several state government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, Abu Dhabi Police, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) and the Department of Transport.
Police patrols monitor vehicles entering the area to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
Ambulances and medical staff were on hand to administer first aid to those in need of it.
A spokesman for the mosque said worshippers had voiced their happiness at being able to visit the mosque for their iftar meals, and appreciated the efforts of the charity project’s managers.
