ABU DHABI // The last countdown pedestrian signals have been installed along the Corniche, officials announced yesterday.
The signals, which use a digital timer to display how many seconds pedestrians have to cross the road, have been installed at crossings from the junction before Emirates Palace to Al Mina.
The signals cut the number of traffic accidents by 50 per cent, Abu Dhabi Municipality said.
The next step is to install the signals at other junctions in the city, with priority being given to those with the heaviest pedestrian traffic.
The municipality also announced that it had expanded its closed-circuit television coverage to all streets and junctions on Abu Dhabi island.
It has installed 70 additional CCTV cameras, bringing the total number monitoring traffic to 162.

Tank warfare
Lt Gen Erik Petersen, deputy chief of programs, US Army, has argued it took a “three decade holiday” on modernising tanks.
“There clearly remains a significant armoured heavy ground manoeuvre threat in this world and maintaining a world class armoured force is absolutely vital,” the general said in London last week.
“We are developing next generation capabilities to compete with and deter adversaries to prevent opportunism or miscalculation, and, if necessary, defeat any foe decisively.”
