DUBAI // A man who was found guilty of being part of a gang that tied up and tortured a civil engineer in his home before bundling him into a bag and robbing his flat must see out his three-year jail term, Dubai Court of Appeal has ruled.
At Dubai Criminal Court in March this year Irishman L A, 50, denied that along with three others, who were not arrested, he tied up 27-year-old Afghan A S at his flat in Bur Dubai on May 8 last year.
L A was found guilty of confining A S and torturing him as well as robbing him and trespassing into his apartment. Prosecutors said A S’s hands were bound using a plastic tie, that he was blindfolded, and his mouth covered with Duct tape before he was tortured with a Taser.
A S was then bundled into a travel bag and left in a wardrobe while L A and the others robbed his home, stealing cash, a mobile phone and a watch.
A S said in records that he was taken by surprise by the men while he was in the bathroom, adding that he was then dragged to the bedroom where he was stunned with a Taser. L A’s jail sentence will be followed by deportation.
