Abu Dhabi // More than 1,000 students in Kenya have honoured the legacy of the founding President Sheikh Zayed at the second annual Sheikh Khalifa Sports Day.

Students took part in track and field events on Tuesday at the Mbaraki Sport Centre in Mombasa, the nation’s second-largest city.

Events included the 100-metre sprint, 10-kilometre dash, football, volleyball, discus and javelin.

Students taking part were from Sheikh Khalifa Secondary and Technical School – funded by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation – Istiqama Academy, Bi Nuru Memorial Secondary School and Moyowe Secondary School, Malindi.

Winners received cash, trophies and other incentives aimed at encouraging them to improve their physical fitness.

“A well-rounded education needs to be supplemented by adequate health and fitness activities, and this is what the annual Sheikh Khalifa Sport Day is set to achieve,” said Mohammed Al Khoori, the director general of the foundation.

“By providing them the opportunity to put their physical faculties to the test, these students not only enjoy a day of fun and festivities but also have a great engagement experience and a chance to connect with one another through team building and friendly competition.”

The event was organised and sponsored by UAE marathon record-holder Fahad Al Braik, with the support of the Sheikh Khalifa school staff and the foundation.
