After fanfare, fireworks and Luis Fonsi at the opening ceremony, it was down to business of winning gold on day one of the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE women basketballers got their quest for gold under way against Finland while powelifting, bocce, volleyball and gymastics events began at Adnec in the capital.

Outside of Adnec Arena, the UAE Unified Football Team got their campaign back on track with a 4-0 win over South Africa.

Khalid Al Maamari scored a brace and goals from Ayman Al Maqbali and Abdelaziz Al Hamour gave the energetic home crowd something to savour at Zayed Sports City.

The UAE, who were edged out 2-1 by Spain on Tuesday, take on Jamaica in its final Group A match.

Plan to boost public schools

A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.

It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.

Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.

Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.
