RAS AL KHAIMAH // Two prisoners have died in their cell at Ras Al Khaimah Prison from suspected drugs overdoses.
Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National, reported that one of the inmates acquired the drugs during a check-up visit to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where another inmate had hidden drugs in a toilet.
The prisoner then picked up the drugs and smuggled them into prison in his stomach.
Upon returning to his cell, he regurgitated the drugs and hurriedly used them with his cellmate. The act resulted in the death of both men.
Brigadier Hamad Adeel Al Shamsi, Director General of Correctional and Punitive Establishments at the Ministry of Interior, expressed his regret over the deaths.
He called on members of the community to work together to help drug addicts seek rehabilitation.
He said the investigation is still continuing to find the third party who provided the narcotics to the inmate.
