Registration for the Ministry of Interior’s automated border-crossing programme resumes on January 5 at the Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island.
The e-gate system will cut the time spent going through passport control to just 20 seconds.
The roll-out is part of the Smart Government e-borders project, which aims to simplify border crossing in the UAE by replacing traditional passport-control desks with automated kiosks.
Travellers who are registered with the scheme, which is free for those who sign up during this drive, can enter or leave the country by swiping their passports at an e-gate kiosk, stepping through a gate and having their eyes and faces scanned by a camera.
Emiratis, expatriates, GCC nationals and visitors who obtained an entry visa upon arrival to the UAE may register for the system.
Applicants must be at least 5 years old and present a passport valid for a minimum of six months.
A Ministry of Interior registration desk will be open from January 5 to 9 between 10am and 10pm at the Galleria.
To register, you must provide your passport details and have your eyes and hands scanned.
The e-gate system, which is installed at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at Abu Dhabi International Airport, will eventually be rolled out to all of the country’s airports.
Many people have signed up for the programme following a registration drive at malls across the capital over the summer.
