Sheikh Mohammed's 2013 wish for the UAE

The Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai took to Twitter to deliver his message for the new year.

DUBAI // Three New Year’s messages from the Ruler of Dubai were retweeted more than 6,000 times by yesterday afternoon.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, also Vice President of the UAE, took to Twitter at 9pm on December 31.

He said he hoped this year would be “full of accomplishments, blessings and happiness to you and your loved ones”.

He continued in two subsequent tweets.

“For 41 years, we’ve gone by a golden rule: each year should be better than the previous one and each achievement stronger than its predecessor,” he wrote.

“Although 2012 was a successful year full of significant achievements in the UAE, with God’s help 2013 will be even better and greater.”

The messages were sent in Arabic and English and were retweeted 6,177 times by 1pm yesterday.

The Arabic tweets were retweeted 4,529 times and the English tweets repeated 1,648 times.

The most popular of the three Arabic tweets – about the UAE’s golden rule of improving – was retweeted 2,190 times.

The most popular English tweet, in which Sheikh Mohammed wished “accomplishments, blessings and happiness”, was retweeted 691 times.

The message was later posted on the Ruler’s Facebook page and received more than 15,500 likes in three hours. Followers left more than 1,900 comments, some from as far afield as Nepal, South Africa and Brazil.

Should late investors consider cryptocurrencies?

Wealth managers recommend late investors to have a balanced portfolio that typically includes traditional assets such as cash, government and corporate bonds, equities, commodities and commercial property.

They do not usually recommend investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies due to the risk and volatility associated with them.

“It has produced eye-watering returns for some, whereas others have lost substantially as this has all depended purely on timing and when the buy-in was. If someone still has about 20 to 25 years until retirement, there isn’t any need to take such risks,” Rupert Connor of Abacus Financial Consultant says.

He adds that if a person is interested in owning a business or growing a property portfolio to increase their retirement income, this can be encouraged provided they keep in mind the overall risk profile of these assets.
