The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai took to Twitter on Tuesday to celebrate Arabic Language day.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said the UAE was a fervent supporter of initiatives aimed at establishing Arabic as a “language of life”.

“On world Arabic Language day the UAE celebrates this immortal language through research and renewed governmental and cultural policies,” he wrote.

“We have a national agenda for the Arabic language and we’ve instructed more studies and initiatives to establish Arabic as a language of life.”

Arabic Language Day was established by the United Nations, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2010.

The day seeks to celebrate one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 290 million people speaking it every day.

As part of the day's celebrations, The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation launched the hashtag #بالعربي on Twitter.

The hashtag translates to “In Arabic” - encouraging more social media users to spend the day speaking the language.

The initiative saw a number of celebrities and business leaders joining in on Twitter.

Jamal bin Huwaireb, chief executive of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, urged Arabic speakers to help promote their mother tongue.

“Let us cooperate to restore our Arabic language to its natural place among the advanced languages through,” he said.

He said Arabic speakers could do this through “increasing Arabic content, posting to our social media accounts in Arabic and conducting commercial transactions in Arabic.”

Others promoted the beauty of the Arabic language to non-Arabs,

Media presenter Jasim Al Shehmi tweeted a picture of him giving a football shirt to Brazilian legend Ronaldo.

“I’m saying it in Arabic ‘the shirt suits you, Ronaldo!’” he said.

Writer Omer Al Saedi tweeted: “Today is Arabic language day, let us celebrate our glorious language, the language of the Holy Quran and All Arabs”
