“We have a national agenda for the Arabic language and we’ve instructed more studies and initiatives to establish Arabic as a language of life.”
Arabic Language Day was established by the United Nations, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2010.
The day seeks to celebrate one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 290 million people speaking it every day.
As part of the day's celebrations, The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation launched the hashtag #بالعربي on Twitter.
The hashtag translates to “In Arabic” - encouraging more social media users to spend the day speaking the language.
The initiative saw a number of celebrities and business leaders joining in on Twitter.
Jamal bin Huwaireb, chief executive of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, urged Arabic speakers to help promote their mother tongue.
