Sharjah Ruler announces Arabic Language Academy

SHARJAH // An academy to preserve the Arabic language has been set up in Sharjah.

The academy, which was formed after a decrree by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, will focus on maintaining Arabic by keeping it relevant to sciences, technology, literature and arts.

It will also aim to revive and document Arab and Islamic heritage, and encourage books to be published in Arabic.

“The academy will come in handy at a time when the language is suffering alienation within its very home, as it is being used incorrectly, mixed with foreign languages and replaced with these languages by younger generations,” said Aisha Saif, former secretary general of Sharjah Education Council.

Dr Hamid Al Nuaimi, chancellor of the University of Sharjah, said the academy would address the major challenges posed by the technological changes that are sweeping the world.
