SHARJAH // A new initiative to have 1,001 Emirati books published by next year has been launched in Sharjah

The Dh5 million campaign, titled ‘1001 Titles’ was announced on Monday by Knowledge without Borders (KWB) to encourage Emirati writers and publishing houses to print and publish 1,001 new books by 2017.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, head of the organising committee of KWB, said the initiative is in line with the announcement of 2016 as the year of reading by the President Sheikh Khalifa.

“The new initiative under the slogan ‘nurturing talent to enrich content’ aims to ensure the continuity of intellectual output and achieve the future we want for our country and culture,” said Sheikha Bodour.

The KWB will fund the new titles depending on the type and quality. It also will include new releases in libraries around Sharjah.

Rashid Al Kous, general manager of the KWB, said books that include classic Arabic and are in line with Islamic, Arab and Gulf values and traditions will be given priority.
