All eyes were on Hazza Al Mansouri's historic blast-off for space on Wednesday, including one very important person in Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, watched the mission from a smartphone while on a cycling trip in the desert.

The video shows Sheikh Mohammed watching intently as the Soyuz lifts off for the International Space Station at 5:57pm.

It was posted to the Instagram page of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed has been central to the UAE space effort. He established the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre in 2015 and announced the competition for the UAE's first astronaut in 2017.

That competition was won by Maj Al Mansouri, who on Wednesday became the first Emirati in space.
