There is still time to apply to become the UAE’s next astronaut after a deadline to join the next batch of Emiratis seeking to travel to space was extended.
Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre announced it would accept applications for its second UAE Astronaut Programme until March 31 due to a large response.
Those hoping to join the programme must be UAE nationals aged 18 and over, proficient in both Arabic and English, and university graduates. All professions would be considered, according to MBRSC.
The most promising candidates would be subjected to an interview by a committee of 10 specialists, including the UAE’s first astronauts, Hazza Al Mansouri and Sultan Al Neyadi.
"The great interest in joining the second batch of the programme reflects the ambition of UAE citizens, and their keenness to achieve the UAE's goals in the field of space exploration and realise more milestones in space science and research," said Yousuf Al Shaibani, director-general of MBRSC.
Maj Al Mansouri and Dr Al Neyadi were selected from 4,022 applicants for the chance to become the UAE’s first astronaut. Maj Al Mansouri was ultimately chosen at the lead astronaut, making history after spending eight days aboard the International Space Station last year.
