Sailor killed in fire on ship at Sharjah port



SHARJAH // A sailor was killed and three others injured in a fire the gutted a vessel docked in Sharjah’s Al Hamriya port.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday on a Panama-flagged ship carrying diesel fuel and was reported to civil defence at 5.29am.

The ship had 15 crew members, including 14 from Asian countries and one from an Arab country. Emergency crews took the three injured sailors to hospital for treatment.

Firefighters from Al Hamriya, with the help of the UAE Coastguard, contained the fire within 40 minutes, said Lt Col Sami Al Naqbi, director of Sharjah Civil Defence.

“Fire crews were able to contain the fire and prevent it from expanding to the docks or to adjacent vessels,” Col Al Naqbi said. “Fire teams from Ajman and UAQ assisted in putting out the fire.”
