RTA confirms two new Salik gates in Dubai

DUBAI // Two new Salik toll gates will become active on Dubai's motorways on April 15.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the launch of the toll-gate system's third phase yesterday.

The first gate is Al Mamzar Toll, located before and after Al Mamzar Bridge on Al Ittihad Road. The toll will be deducted as motorists pass under the gates.

The other gate is the Airport Tunnel Toll, at the northern entry and exit of the tunnel.

"The launch of phase III of the toll gates system was made after conducting exhaustive traffic and field studies of the first and second phases," said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA chairman and chief executive.

Mr Al Tayer said the initiative came after a network of public buses was introduced and the expansion of Al Khail Road.

About 260,000 vehicles use Al Ittihad Road every day.

"The traffic studies concluded that the installation of a toll-gate system on Al Ittihad Road without installing the system on the Airport Tunnel would result in massive traffic congestion in the Airport Tunnel," Mr Al Tayer said.

Dubai now has six toll points that charge motorists Dh4 each time they pass under a Salik gate.
