Roads closed as high waves cause flooding in northern emirates

Safety notices issued in Fujairah and Sharjah over hazardous weather conditions

Roads in Sharjah and Fujairah have been closed after high waves caused flooding in both emirates.

Police in Sharjah urged members of the public to stay away from the sea due to the hazardous conditions and sealed off Kalba Corniche Road, from Khor Kalba port roundabout to Medan Kalbe, as water levels rose.

Fujairah Municipality shut down Murbah Beach Road and urged members of the public to be cautious.

The municipality launched a clean-up operation on Monday.

Roads in coastal areas in Murbah and Qidfa in Fujairah and Khor Fakkan in Sharjah were hit by flooding, causing disruption for motorists.

“We urge the public to take caution and contact the municipality at 80036 in case of emergency,” said Fujairah Municipality in a statement.

An official at the municipality branch in Qidfa said roads in the area started to flood at about 9.30am on Monday.

“We closed the road temporarily and sent out a team to clear the water out,” said municipality branch manager, Mohammed Hamad.

“The street stretches from Murbah to Qidfa so both areas were affected, but no damage or injuries were recorded,” he said.

Images of high waves and seawater flooding parts of Khor Fakkan Corniche circulated on social media on Monday.

Sharjah police also urged beachgoers to steer clear of affected coastal areas.

"Due to weather fluctuations in the eastern regions of the country. The Sharjah Police General Command calls on the public to exercise caution and refrain from going to the sea because of the high level of water," said the statement.
