Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has ordered Dh340 million ($92.5m) to be distributed through social welfare programmes during Ramadan.
This amount will be given in addition to the monthly aid provided to eligible people who are registered for social assistance across the UAE.
Federal Law No. 2 of 2001 states that the poor and several vulnerable categories are entitled to social security in the UAE.
These include Emiratis who are widowed and divorced, disabled people, senior Emiratis, orphans, children of unknown descent, unmarried girls, sick people, married students, the family of a prisoner, physically incapacitated people, vulnerable people who have been abandoned and citizens married to foreigners.
The benefits programme is the latest in a series of initiatives announced by the Abu Dhabi government to improve the standard of living and provide a decent life for all Emirati families.
Last year, more than 800 Emiratis were granted housing loans or had their debts cleared on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
In December 2018, the capital launched Abu Dhabi Social Support Programme to support low-income Emiratis living in the emirate.
The income-based scheme managed by the emirate’s Department of Community Development offers housing support, free health care at private and government hospitals, and subsidies for food and services to eligible citizens.
The scheme was part of the objectives outlined in Ghadan 21, a Dh50 billion stimulus package and series of initiatives to improve the quality of life for Emiratis.
What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood when your kidneys fail and can no longer do the job.
It gets rid of your body's wastes, extra salt and water, and helps to control your blood pressure. The main cause of kidney failure is diabetes and hypertension.
There are two kinds of dialysis — haemodialysis and peritoneal.
In haemodialysis, blood is pumped out of your body to an artificial kidney machine that filter your blood and returns it to your body by tubes.
In peritoneal dialysis, the inside lining of your own belly acts as a natural filter. Wastes are taken out by means of a cleansing fluid which is washed in and out of your belly in cycles.
It isn’t an option for everyone but if eligible, can be done at home by the patient or caregiver. This, as opposed to home haemodialysis, is covered by insurance in the UAE.

Financial considerations before buying a property
Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. This means they not only pay less in interest but their monthly costs are also reduced. Ideally, the monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 20 per cent of the purchaser’s total household income, says Carol Glynn, founder of Conscious Finance Coaching.
“If it’s a rental property, plan for the property to have periods when it does not have a tenant. Ensure you have enough cash set aside to pay the mortgage and other costs during these periods, ideally at least six months,” she says.
Also, shop around for the best mortgage interest rate. Understand the terms and conditions, especially what happens after any introductory periods, Ms Glynn adds.
Using a good mortgage broker is worth the investment to obtain the best rate available for a buyer’s needs and circumstances. A good mortgage broker will help the buyer understand the terms and conditions of the mortgage and make the purchasing process efficient and easier.

Soldier F
“I was in complete disgust at the fact that only one person was to be charged for Bloody Sunday.
“Somebody later said to me, 'you just watch - they'll drop the charge against him'. And sure enough, the charges against Soldier F would go on to be dropped.
“It's pretty hard to think that 50 years on, the State is still covering up for what happened on Bloody Sunday.”
