Ras Al Khaimah courts has launched an initiative to strengthen family cohesion and reduce divorce rates in the northernmost emirate.

The project, called Happy Family, Excellent Children, hopes to help families solve problems and to build better communication channels with their children with the aim of creating more stable family units and reducing the number of marriages that end in divorce.

Ahmed Mohammed Al Khatri, chairman of RAK Courts, said the initiative includes programmes, activities, and lectures to raise awareness of ways to strengthen family values.

Figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showed there were 15,105 marriages and 4,145 divorces in Abu Dhabi in 2011.
