DUBAI // A poorly maintained car refuelling at an Enoc petrol station in Al Twar was likely to blame for a fire that broke out last Saturday, an initial review of closed-circuit television footage revealed.
The footage shows Dubai Civil Defence using dry chemical powder to put out the blaze, containing the damage to the pump, the car and the side of the petrol station.
Health, safety and environment (HSE) measures, including passive fire designs and an auto shut-off and emergency response system, prevented the fire from spreading outside the refuelling area.
It was extinguished in about 10 minutes. No injuries were reported after staff and customers were cleared.
An Enoc statement said the safety of its customers and employees was a top priority, and the company was continuing its investigation into the incident in cooperation with civil defence and HSE.
Overheated engines, fuel overflows and spills, smoking and throwing cigarette butts in waste bins were common causes of accidents at petrol stations.
Motorists are being urged to switch off their engines, avoid opening the bonnet of the car, smoking or using mobile phones while refuelling.
They should also avoid leaving their vehicles while refuelling, and children should not be left unattended. Caution should be taken when entering and leaving petrol stations to avoid pedestrians.

The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
