DUBAI // Two men who planned to ship more than five kilograms of heroin to Europe were thwarted after a police tip-off, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Monday.

Prosecutors said Dubai Police were told that Pakistani tailor R K, 40, and driver M K, 47, were in possession of and were dealing drugs.

Emirati police captain A R said in court records that an investigation confirmed that the pair were involved in drugs.

“We obtained an arrest warrant and on August 30 last year, we arrested R K in Al Muraqqabat,” said the captain, adding that the tailor confessed that he and his accomplice received more than five kilos of heroin two weeks before his arrest, after wiring Dh52,553 to dealers in Iran.

Records showed that he hid the drugs at his home in Sharjah’s Al Nabaa area.

“He told us that before he purchased the five kilos, he used to be a middle man who received drugs from a man in Iran five or six times before. Then the Iranian man would later direct him to where in Europe the drugs should be sent,” added the captain.

The heroin was hidden inside a gas cylinder and arrived through a Dubai port, the captain said.

An unidentified man handed the cylinder to R K and M K, who later used a saw to cut open the cylinder and take out the drugs.

“M K was arrested after he was tricked into meeting R K,” A R said.

Records showed that the heroin amounted to 5.4kg.

In court on Monday, both men denied charges of possessing and promoting the drug.

The next hearing will be on January 21.
