Plan to improve residential roads

AJMAN // Ajman Municipality has begun a Dh250 million (US$68m) project to repair feeder roads in residential areas and to build new ones. The project is part of a Dh3 billion plan to improve the road network throughout the emirate. Ahmed Abdrazaq al Awadhi, the director of the municipality's engineering section, said the plan was to enable the feeder network, particularly roads to government and private schools, to cope with the emirate's rapid development.

Mr Awadhi said at a press conference that work had begun last week in Musheiref, Humaidiya, Zahra, Julfa, Naeemiya, Sawan, Karama and industrial areas. In such areas as Humaidiya, where there are not enough feeder roads, they would be built, he said. "We have already designed the plans for the interior roads in Humaidiya. We will soon be putting the paper designs in action." Small feeder roads caused congestion and accidents in some areas. "We will turn most of these small roads into one-way roads and also create others to beat the shortages," Mr Awadhi said. That would help to reduce traffic congestion on main roads.

"Our plan is to dedicate these three years to infrastructural development all over the emirate. Our road design plans can accommodate future population growth and economic development for 20 years to come." Authorities emphasised at a recent public forum that expanding roads and building new ones was one of the major undertakings of the municipality's four-year plan for development for 2009-2013. In May, the Government announced a Dh3bn, three-year project to develop the emirate's roads.

Main roads to be expanded include Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Street, linking Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road with Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed roads. Zorah Street will also be expanded. Developing Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Road would include building three tunnels, expanding the road to three lanes on each side and increasing its length to four kilometres to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, Mr Awadhi said.

Linking Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road with Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed roads would include building a tunnel under Humaidiya bridge and building another bridge to link to Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Road. Dh325m will be spent to build four major bridges, including a 500-metre bridge on Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Road that would be the longest in the emirate. Bridges will also be built at the intersection of Sheikh Maktoum bin Omar Al Aas Road, at the intersection of Zahra Street with Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Road, and on Naeemiya Road.

The Facility’s Versatility

Between the start of the 2020 IPL on September 20, and the end of the Pakistan Super League this coming Thursday, the Zayed Cricket Stadium has had an unprecedented amount of traffic.
Never before has a ground in this country – or perhaps anywhere in the world – had such a volume of major-match cricket.
And yet scoring has remained high, and Abu Dhabi has seen some classic encounters in every format of the game.

October 18, IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders tied with Sunrisers Hyderabad
The two playoff-chasing sides put on 163 apiece, before Kolkata went on to win the Super Over

January 8, ODI, UAE beat Ireland by six wickets
A century by CP Rizwan underpinned one of UAE’s greatest ever wins, as they chased 270 to win with an over to spare

February 6, T10, Northern Warriors beat Delhi Bulls by eight wickets
The final of the T10 was chiefly memorable for a ferocious over of fast bowling from Fidel Edwards to Nicholas Pooran

March 14, Test, Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by six wickets
Eleven wickets for Rashid Khan, 1,305 runs scored in five days, and a last session finish

June 17, PSL, Islamabad United beat Peshawar Zalmi by 15 runs
Usman Khawaja scored a hundred as Islamabad posted the highest score ever by a Pakistan team in T20 cricket

Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Akira Back Dubai

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as,  “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.
