SHARJAH // Petrol is once again flowing at Adnoc stations in Sharjah city after supplies of fuel were delivered yesterday.
Pumps ran dry on Monday at stations on King Faisal Road and in the Yarmook and Al Khan neighbourhoods after stocks of Special and E-Plus petrol sold out.
“The supply truck came around this morning from Ras Al Khaimah and now we have all petrol types full in stock,” said an attendant at the Adnoc station in Al Khan.
The long queues of vehicles that formed outside of Emarat stations, which were unaffected by the 24-hour shortage, were nowhere to be seen as motorists filled up with ease.
However, Adnoc were not avaiable to give an explanation as to what caused the shortage or give assurances to customers that it would not happen again.
Motorists in the Northern Emirates have got used to having to wait in long lines to fill up since the closure of the Eppco and Enoc stations in 2011.
The shortage of pumps means even the slightest disruption to supplies by either Adnoc or Emarat, the only two fuel companies supplying the area, causes problems.
The issue was made more difficult earlier this year when a number of older, private petrol stations that worked under the “Emirates” branding closed down in the Northern Emirates.
Two stations in Al Arouba Street in Sharjah, one on Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Street in Ajman and another on King Faisal Road in Umm Al Quwain have shut up shop.
After the the Enoc group, which owns the Enoc and Eppco stations, stopped supplying petrol to the Northern Emirates in 2011, the Sharjah government issued a 72-hour ultimatum to resume refuelling or close down all its stations.
This ultimatum was not met and the pumps were closed.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, intervened and ordered Adnoc to take action.
The company has since increased its supply of fuel to the Northern Emirates and is building more petrol stations.

- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.

Towering concerns
Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

Who is Tim-Berners Lee?
Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in a household of mathematicians and computer scientists. Both his mother, Mary Lee, and father, Conway, were early computer scientists who worked on the Ferranti 1 - the world's first commercially-available, general purpose digital computer.
