ABU DHABI // Five parksranging in size from 7,600 square metres to 14,000 square metres are to be built in Abu Dhabi over the next year.
The construction of the parks – four of which will be in Al Shamkha and one in Al Adlah – will begin in September and take about 12 months to complete.
“Developing and constructing parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities in the mainland echoes the vision of the municipality of Abu Dhabi City of ensuring a superior quality of life and sustainable environment for the residents of Abu Dhabi,” said Rashid Al Falasi, director of parks and recreational facilities at the municipality.
He said playgrounds would be appropriate for all age groups and would encourage children to exercise.
The parks are be accessible to people with special needs.
Areas will be set aside for football, exercise and barbecues and the parks will include shaded areas and fountains.
Each park will have a distinctive theme, said Mr Al Falasi.
He said these themes would “perpetuate sustainability concepts using tip-top materials, advanced energy-efficient lighting systems, and rationalising consumption of irrigation water”.
Native plants will account for 20 to 30 per cent of the total plantation area.

Classification of skills
A worker is categorised as skilled by the MOHRE based on nine levels given in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) issued by the International Labour Organisation.
A skilled worker would be someone at a professional level (levels 1 – 5) which includes managers, professionals, technicians and associate professionals, clerical support workers, and service and sales workers.
The worker must also have an attested educational certificate higher than secondary or an equivalent certification, and earn a monthly salary of at least Dh4,000.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.
Nisab: the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. Traditionally, the nisab threshold was 87.48 grams of gold, or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value of the nisab therefore varies by current prices and currencies.
Zakat Al Mal: the ‘cleansing’ of wealth, as one of the five pillars of Islam; a spiritual duty for all Muslims meeting the ‘nisab’ wealth criteria in a lunar year, to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth in alms to the deserving and needy.
Zakat Al Fitr: a donation to charity given during Ramadan, before Eid Al Fitr, in the form of food. Every adult Muslim who possesses food in excess of the needs of themselves and their family must pay two qadahs (an old measure just over 2 kilograms) of flour, wheat, barley or rice from each person in a household, as a minimum.

When Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi
Known as The Lady of Arabic Song, Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi on November 28, 1971, as part of celebrations for the fifth anniversary of the accession of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as Ruler of Abu Dhabi. A concert hall was constructed for the event on land that is now Al Nahyan Stadium, behind Al Wahda Mall. The audience were treated to many of Kulthum's most well-known songs as part of the sold-out show, including Aghadan Alqak and Enta Omri.
