ABU DHABI // Drivers in the Tourist Club Area will find an additional 4,644 paid parking spaces beginning February 29.
The Mawaqif parking management system will be in effect in an area between Zayed the Second, Al Falah, Al Salam and Najda streets from 8am until 10pm, Saturday to Thursday.
Residents in newly assigned areas will be given up to two parking permits per household. The permits are valid only for the sector on the permit.
Residents will require a passport and visa copy, proof of residency, a water and electricity bill and proof of vehicle ownership.
Residence permits are Dh800 for the first vehicle and Dh1200 for the second.
Standard parking marked by turquoise and black kerbstones will cost Dh2 per hour or Dh15 per day.
Drivers will be charged Dh3 per hour for premium parking, marked by turquoise and white kerbstones, for a four-hour limit.
Parking will be free on public holidays.
Abu Faisal, 27, spends one to two hours a day looking for parking around his apartment in the Tourist Club Area and is going to move neighbourhoods completely because of the parking situation.
He has little faith that the new parking system will improve the situation.
“Parking? Catastrophe. Disaster. Whatever you want to call it, it will not improve. It is hopeless,” said the father of two from Iraq.
“I spend 10 to 45 minutes parking every day,” said Rehab Faraj, 38, of Egypt who lives in the newly zoned area. “So I’m waiting to see if it will be better or worse.”
Abdul Prabhat, manager of Kawloon Chinese Restaurant, said if a new parking system were introduced in his area the restaurant could attract as many as 600 more customers a month.
“Our guests are not getting parking; most guests are disappointed in the parking and they go around and around,” Mr Prabhat said. “If this parking area is improved it will be very good for business.”

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.

The flights
Direct flights from the UAE to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, are available with Air Arabia, (www.airarabia.com) Fly Dubai (www.flydubai.com) or Etihad (www.etihad.com) from Dh1,200 return including taxes. The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. To get to Jomson from Kathmandu you must first fly to the lake-side resort town of Pokhara with either Buddha Air (www.buddhaair.com) or Yeti Airlines (www.yetiairlines.com). Both charge around US$240 (Dh880) return. From Pokhara there are early morning flights to Jomson with Yeti Airlines or Simrik Airlines (www.simrikairlines.com) for around US$220 (Dh800) return.
The trek
Restricted area permits (US$500 per person) are required for trekking in the Upper Mustang area. The challenging Meso Kanto pass between Tilcho Lake and Jomson should not be attempted by those without a lot of mountain experience and a good support team. An excellent trekking company with good knowledge of Upper Mustang, the Annaurpuna Circuit and Tilcho Lake area and who can help organise a version of the trek described here is the Nepal-UK run Snow Cat Travel (www.snowcattravel.com).
