Dubai// A nurse must see out her six-month jail sentence for embezzling more than Dh1 million by forging receipts, the Dubai Court of Appeal has ruled.
D B, a 55-year-old Filipina, was working at a Dubai hotel when she made the forgeries, the criminal court was told in an earlier hearing.
In March this year she forged receipts issued by a Dubai Municipality clinic and modified each amount from Dh110 to Dh210, then pocketed the difference.
Accounting manager E Y testified that D B was hired as a hotel nurse before her title was changed to health care coordinator.
“The accounting department audited two receipts filed by the nurse and found the names on the forms were those of reception employees who had already done health tests,” said the 59-year-old Egyptian.
An investigation by the hotel’s HR department revealed that the nurse had submitted duplicate receipts 2,300 times after changing the pictures of employees on the forms. She had also applied for staff members who had left work. She admitted to all forgeries during the hotel’s internal investigation, said the witness.
Records showed that D B managed to embezzle Dh1,258,620.
DB will be deported after serving her jail term.
