DUBAI // A nurse embezzled more than Dh1 million by forging thousands of receipts for medical tests, a court heard.

Prosecutors said 55-year-old Filipina D B worked at a hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road between 2007 and March this year and altered 9,195 receipts issued by a Dubai Municipality clinic by modifying the amount charged and pocketing the difference. In total, D B embezzled Dh1,258,620, the court was told.

Accounting manager E Y told prosecutors that D B was hired as a nurse at the hotel before her title was changed to healthcare coordinator.

“The accounting department audited two receipts filed by the nurse and found that the names on the forms were for reception employees who had already had the health tests,” the 59-year-old Egyptian said.

The hotel’s H R department investigated and the nurse admitted altering the receipts, the court heard.

“She also changed the pictures of employees on the forms as well as applying for staff members who had left work,” E Y said.

An auditing team found that D B embezzled Dh1,258,620.

Bahraini P R manager M K said D B received Dh10,000 in cash every week to pay for staff medical exams.

“She told us that she embezzled around half a million dirhams,” he said.

D B did not appear in court to enter a plea for forgery and embezzlement charges.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 1.
