ABU DHABI // Sixty per cent of construction work has been completed on a new 62-kilometre highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The road is expected to be complete by the end of this year and spans from Seih Shuaib to the Sweihan Interchange, the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport and the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) announced.

The highway will relieve pressure on the E11 and reduce the number of accidents, said Faisal Al Suwaidi, the department’s director general of highways, according to the state news agency Wam.

Work on the Dh2.1 billion project is progressing as scheduled, said Omar Al Mansouri, acting director of roads at Musanada.

The four-lane highway is an extension of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and passes through Al Maha Forest, Kizad, Al Ajban Road and Zayed Military City to Sweihan Road. The project includes six bridges and six underground passes, boosting safety by reducing the likelihood of crashes with local animals, Mr Al Mansouri said.
