DUBAI // A muezzin molested his 11-year-old pupil, a court heard yesterday.
Afghan K A, 29, was teaching the girl tajweed – the correct way to recite the Quran – when he stopped the lesson, groped her sexually and kissed her, prosecutors told the Criminal Court.
The girl’s father, from Pakistan, said he had arranged with the muezzin to teach the Quran to his son and daughter. But the girl told her mother the muezzin would often send her brother out of the room so that he could touch her.
“He used to ask her if she liked him and if she had a Twitter account,” the father said.
The muezzin confessed to forceful sex assault during police interrogation but denied molesting the girl in court.
He claimed he was merely pointing at her throat to show her where the sounds should come from.
“I teach Quran, my father also taught Quran, God forbid that I do such a thing,” he said. “I pointed at the lower part of her throat and told her that the H while reading Quran should come from there.”
The next hearing was scheduled for December 8.
