DUBAI // A mother has lost her appeal against her one-year jail term for prostitution.
A?M, 29, from Tajikistan, was arrested along with her Omani lover S?S, 40, last Ramadan at an apartment in Al Baraha.
At the time she was pregnant to a man she had met in a nightclub, but he fled the country when she got pregnant.
She was charged with being in the country illegally, having consensual sex out of wedlock with several men – resulting in an illegitimate baby – and working as a prostitute.
She denied prostitution at Dubai Criminal Court but was jailed for a year, to be followed by deportation.
The woman told the court she had been deported in 2005 then spent a day at sea before arriving in Fujairah in January last year.
"There was a car waiting for us when we arrived and it took us to Ajman, where the woman who arranged our trip was waiting," she said. "I paid her Dh7,000 in fees and then left to Dubai, where I lived with a woman I knew."
A few weeks after the baby's father fled, she met the Omani. She moved in with him and he paid her expenses.
"We met at the dance club and became close," he said. "Later she told me she was an illegal resident, so I asked her to correct her situation."
He faces a charge of housing an illegal resident at the Court of Residency.
The Dubai Court of Appeal also upheld her deportation order.
