More traffic surveillance cameras installed in Ras Al Khaimah

Fifteen traffic surveillance cameras have been installed on Ras Al Khaimah’s busiest intersections.

The new cameras are set to catch speeding motorists, red-light runners and drivers who switch lanes without indicating.

They are part of RAK Police's efforts to reduce cases of reckless driving.

Motorists caught speeding, running a red light or abruptly changing lanes face fines of up to Dh1,500, said Maj Gen Ali Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of RAK Police.

“Heavy vehicle drivers will be fined Dh1,500 and be given six black points if they fail to stay in their lane while a Dh400 fine will be imposed on light vehicle drivers for the same reason,” he said.

“Drivers who stop in the middle of a yellow-painted intersection will be fined Dh500."

According to the updated Federal Traffic Law that came into effect in July last year, running a red light will earn a motorist a Dh1,000 fine and 12 black points on their licence and their vehicle will be impounded for 30 days.

Speeding motorists will be fined between Dh300 and Dh2,000, depending on the severity of the offence.

The new devices will be activated pending the installation of signs before each intersection to alert drivers.
