ABU DHABI // The brothers of an Emirati man who was killed by his former prison cellmate wanted more than Dh1 million in blood money.
The former inmates met at the victim’s apartment. They both got drunk and the victim is alleged to have attempted to have sex with the defendant, Y, from Iraq.
A fight broke out, and Y stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife, killing him.
In the Criminal Court, the family refused to pardon or accept blood money and the defendant was sentenced to life in prison.
When the case was in appeals, the father of the victim decided to go to court and pardon Y for the murder.
On his way he was involved in a car crash and died.
The Appeals Court cut the life sentence to 15 years.
The brothers then decided they wanted more than Dh1 million from Y as blood money.
During Tuesday’s hearing, defence lawyer Ali Al Abbadi asked for an adjournment to negotiate with the brothers.
The case was adjourned until December.
