More than 54,000 people visited Sharjah’s libraries last year and a string of successful events were staged.
Training courses, cultural activities and tribute ceremonies were enjoyed, while the Libraries Directorate organised the 14th edition of the Sharjah Award for Library Literature.
The new edition has been announced and will feature the theme, The Arts of Making Islamic Books.
The visitor numbers and successes were revealed in a report by the Directorate of Libraries at the Department of Culture and Information in Sharjah.
Abdulla Al Manaei, head of the Libraries Directorate, said achievements last year included a standardised library catalogue for the publications of the Libraries Directorate, Police Research Studies Centre and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
There are 267,392 titles available at Sharjah Library in living languages, Mr Al Manaei said, with another 28,535 at Al Dhaid Library, 26,943 at Khor Fakkan Library, 27,287 at Kalba Library, 19,855 at Wadi Al Helo Library and 26,764 at Dibba Al Hisn Library .
