A new system for measuring fish length is being rolled out by the Ministry of Environment and Water to promote environmental sustainability and protect natural resources.
The new system involves digital devices that use laser technology. The devices will also be used to measure the height and length of fishing gargoors and the openings of fishing nets, said Saif Al Shara, an engineer with the ministry.
The devices are compact and designed to provide calculations based on area, size, length and height.
The system is in accordance with Ministerial Decree No 580 of 2015, regarding the prevention of fishing, selling and marketing of fingerlings.
The ministry also announced a new phase of inspections using the devices that will be carried out by specialists from its external auditing section.
