DUBAI // Two men who offered Customs inspectors a Dh40,000 bribe to release a shipment of musical instruments that had been confiscated will spend a year in jail.

Dubai Criminal Court convicted the Indian manager, 45, and his business partner and compatriot, 46, of bribery. The court also ordered the confiscation of the Dh40,000.

On May 17 last year, the two asked inspectors to stamp shipment papers at Jebel Ali Port. They also asked them to write a note stating that two vehicles containing the instruments had passed inspection, when they had not.

An Emirati inspector, 27, said he told his boss and police about the bribe, but was told to play along with the Indian men.

“I met him at 2pm the next day and he was arrested when he handed me the money,” he said.

The pair denied all charges against them but will be deported after serving their sentences.
