DUBAI // Two Emiratis impersonated police officers and robbed Dh7,000 from a 40-year-old man with the help of their friends, a court heard on Thursday.

Prosecutors said soldier KY, 24, and unemployed AA, 26, stopped Bangladeshi victim AM on January 12, saying they were detectives who wanted to see his ID.

“They stopped me after midnight and I got suspicious, so requested to see their IDs,” said AM. “AA flashed a card in front of me that had a logo similar to a police logo.”

When the victim pulled out his wallet to show his ID, the defendants attacked him and tried to take the wallet. “A car stopped and two people stepped out and of it and attacked me,” added AM.

Prosecutors said that Emirati TH, 22, and two others identified as RA and KS, helped in the attack and the group took Dh7,000 that fell from the victim’s wallet.

The five then got into the car and drove off.

A witness, IM, 28, saw the defendant being beaten. “AM pointed at the defendants’ car and told me that they robbed him,” said the taxi driver witness.

The driver followed the runaway car and was able to take its licence plate number and reported it to police.

The victim then identified KY and AA in a police line-up.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Thursday, the pair were charged with impersonating a police officer.

They were also charged with armed theft, with the third defendant, TH.

The trio did not appear in court to enter a plea and the case was adjourned until April 30.
